WELCOME TO KA WITH MRS. Sandi Velasquez!

Welcome to KA!

BACKGROUND:My name is Mrs. Sandi Velasquez.  I started the Kindergarten here at St. Peter's School 23 years ago.  I have also taught 1st grade and 3rd grade.

Kindergarten is a special time in your child’s life. The excitement and wonder of learning to read, add and subtract is on the faces everyday of all my students. This is a time when your child needs your daily support with homework and words of encouragement. Sometimes Kindergarten can be challenging! Of course, Kindergarten can be fun!!!

PARENT COMMUNICATION: Parents are welcome to call me, send me notes, or meet with me before or after school if there are any questions or concerns.  Our teacher aides are able to translate.

HOMEWORK:  Homework is important- It helps your child develop good study habits and responsibility at an early age.  If they start out having good study habits in Kindergarten, that skill should stay with them throughout their years in school.  Your Kindergartener will have homework every night and the time they spend on it will be age-appropriate (Some children take longer than others to complete assignments.

DISCIPLINE:

Discipline is age-appropriate and our policy is clearly stated in the Student Handbook, which every St. Peter's family receives at the beginning of the school year.
Encourage your child to "listen" when the teacher is talking or explaining something and when he/she is "working" on school work.

Foster a sense of "responsibility" in your child.

Remind your child to always treat others with "respect" - no fighting, name calling, tattling. Encourage them to first try to solve the problem by talking it out with other person. If that does not work, then they may take the problem to the adult(s) in charge. Treat school property with respect.

Grading Policy: Tests, Quizzes and Assessments are graded by the Archdiocesan scale:
100-95 “O” Outstanding-the work is above expectations
94-80 “S” Successful-the work meets expectations
79- “N” Needs Improvement-the work does not meet expectations
Homework and Class work are checked for completion and understanding and sent home in the Friday Folder.

Parent/Teacher conferences for First Grade are in November. I must see every parent at this time. Conferences will be held "as needed" other times.

I am looking forward to working with you and your child this school year!

                                                                  Sincerely,

                                                              Mrs. Velasquez
