Background: My name is Sister Lucy Calvillo (Sister of Mercy). I have been teaching first grade since 1980 at St. Peter's. I speak Spanish but am not able to write it. I welcome any help you can give me in translating into written Spanish when I need help.
Communication: If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am usually in the classroom at about 7:30 a.m.. If you wish to apeak to me after school, it would be better to write me a note or phone since I cannot always stay after. This year 2010-2011 The class is a combination first and second. Both grade will be following the curiculum appropriate for the student's grade.
Homework: Homework is a very important part of your child's education. Homework is usually a review of the class work. If your child does not understand the work , please write me a note about the problem he/she is having. This could be an opportunity for individual help. Please read the directions to your child. Your guidance is important, but the child needs to do the work him or herself. I send a packet of work on Friday and I expect to receive the work back the following Friday (or the last day of school each week.) The minimum of work I expect is 20 minutes per evening for four days a week. This would be an hour and twenty minutes per week. If you have a problem please contact me.
Religion: First graders learn that Jesus, the Son of God, teaches us about the Father and the Holy Spirit. The prayers we review are: The Sign of the Cross, the Our Father, the Morning Offering, and the Hail Mary. The prayers we learn in the first grade are the Glory Be to the Father, the Grace before and after meals, and the Prayer to the Guardian Angel. Children should be going to Mass every Sunday.
Second graders need to know the same prayers as first graders, plus prayers of sorrow. Second graders will be preparing for reconcilation & communion with the students in 2B.
Testing: The time and day of testing varies. I send home a study sheet for reading and spelling tests a week before the tests. Other tests are studies in the class before I give them.
Grading: The grading in the first grade is "O" for outstanding 100% -95%
"S" for successful 94%-80%
"N" 79
If I give a "Star" or just put the number of wrong, I have not graded that work for the report card. The work that is grades with an "O" "S" or "N" is work I record for the report card.
Discipline: My expectations are that a child will be attentive and try his or her best in the classroom. I also expect all of us to be respectful toward ourself and others.
