The History of St. Peter's School
In the early dawn of July 7, 1878, St. Peter's School was opening its doors for the first time. Families were thrilled to have a Catholic school in the "Mission". It was an exciting event which would continue to enrich the community of San Francisco over the past one hundred and thirty years.
San Francisco was challenged at that time with many new beginnings. It was a time of sudden rush into "Golden California" where there were dreams of wealth and riches. It was also a time of many immigrants coming to the United States seeking justice and freedom to practice their religious beliefs. St. Peter's Parish and School has long been known for its support of immigrant families and its strengthening of their Catholic faith.
In 1854, Archbishop Alemany missioned Father Hugh Gallagher to visit Ireland and negotiate with the Sisters of Mercy about coming to San Francisco, California. After numerous negotiations, Mother Baptist Russel headed to the foundation of the Sisters of Mercy to the Bay Area. St. Mary's hospital opened with 150 patients. Then there was Catherine's Home which supported 130 women.
Then came our beloved St. Peter's School in 1878.
At the request of Archbishop Alemany, Father Thomas Gibney, pastor of St. Peter's Parish, asked Mother Baptist Russel, Superior of the Sisters of Mercy in San Francisco, to bring the sisters to St. Peter's to staff a new Catholic elementary school which he had been building. Father Gibney stated that it was to be a "free" school, meaning that there was to be no tuition.
On July 7th, 1878, four Sisters of Mercy opened St. Peter's School with approximately 325 students. As there was no convent, the Sisters lived at St. Catherine's Home on Portrero Avenue and walked to school every day. The following July, Mother Baptist was happy to supply four more sisters to carry on the rapidly expanding work at St. Peter's. Soon the living quarters were built so the sisters could live on the premises.
As St. Peter's Elementary School flourished, there was a need for a Catholic Girls High School. Thus the Sisters of Mercy began St. Peter's Girls High School, also known as St. Peter's Academy. In 1882, the city celebrated the first graduating class from the high school.

La Historia de la Escuela San Pedro
En un temprano atardecer del 7 de Julio de 1878, La escuela San Pedro abria sus puertas por primera vez. Las familias estaban encantadas en tener una escuela Catolica en la "Mission". Fue un evento de conmocion, el cual continuaria en enriquecer la comunidad de San Francisco durante los ultimos 130 años.
San Francisco tenia un reto con muchos comienzos. Era un tiempo del repentino correr a "La California Dorada" donde habian sueños de ricos y riquezas. Era tambien un tiempo de mucho inmigrantes que llegaban a Estados Unidos buscando justicia, libertad y practicar sus creencias religiosas. La parroquia y escuela San Pedro ha sido conocida por su apoyo a las familias inmigrantes y por endurecer su fe Catolica.
En 1854, el Arzobispo Alemany misionero Padre Hugh Gallagher visito Irlanda y negocio con las Hermanas de la Misericordia para que vinieran a San Francisco. Despues vino nuestra querida Escuela San Pedro en 1878.
Por una peticion del Arzobispo Alemany, Padre Thomas Gibney, parroco de la parroquia San Pedro, pidio a la Madre Baptist Russell, superiora de las Hermanas de la Misericordia en San Francisco que trajera a las Hermanas a San Pedro para formar una facultad, en la nueva escuela Catolica elementaria la cual el estaba construyendo. El Padre Gibney dijo que seria "gratis", por decir que no habria pagos de colegiatura.
El 7 de Julio de 1878, cuatro Hermanas de Misericordia abieron la Escuela San Pedro con aproximadamente 325 estudiantes. Como no havia convento, las Hermanas vivian en la Casa de Catherine en la avenida Potrero y caminaban a la escuela todos los dias. En Julio del año siquiente la Madre Baptist estaba feliz en dar cuatro Hermanas mas, las cuales eran necesarias para el trabajo que se agrandaba en San Pedro. Pronto, los cuartos de las hermanas fueron construidos para que las hermanas vivieran en un mismo lugar.
Cuando la escuela de San Pedro florecia, habia una necesidad de Bachillerato Catolico para niñas. Aunque las Hermanas de la Misericordia comenzaron el bachillerato Catolico para niñas, el fue siempre conocido como la Academia San Pedro. En 1882, la cuidad celebro la primer clase graduada del bachillerato. |
